Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at admin@independentwaves.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Supported living is a care model that enables individuals to live independently in their own homes while receiving tailored support based on their personal needs and preferences. At Independent Waves Ltd, we offer a flexible domiciliary care service that includes 24/7 personal care, medication management, meal preparation, and support with social activities, all built around individual timetables. Some people receive round-the-clock support, while others have staff visit at scheduled times. A key feature of our approach is the clear separation between housing and care—each is managed by different teams to ensure specialised attention and greater personalisation. This structure empowers the people we support with more choice, control, and a fulfilling lifestyle rooted in dignity and respect.

Technology and innovation play a crucial role in supported living by enhancing independence, privacy, and dignity for the people we support. Assistive technology helps safeguard individuals by ensuring care is delivered only when needed, allowing them to make their own choices and decisions about daily life. It enables people to take more control of their care, which in turn allows support staff to spend more time engaging in meaningful activities rather than routine tasks. Additionally, technology supports quicker and more effective responses to individuals in distress, helping to de-escalate situations and provide timely, person-centred support. At Independent Waves Ltd, we embrace these tools to create safer, more empowering environments for everyone we support.

Families and friends are always welcome to visit the people we support, and we encourage these positive relationships as an important part of a fulfilling life. While visits can be unannounced, we recommend calling ahead to avoid a wasted journey, as we cannot guarantee the individual will be home at the time. Staff are expected to actively promote visits and support residents in maintaining connections with loved ones, including visiting others themselves. At Independent Waves Ltd, we believe that strong personal relationships are essential to wellbeing, independence, and happiness.

Care Questions

Independent Waves Ltd offers a range of accommodation options, including private and shared rooms, to suit different preferences, needs, and budgets. Our homes typically support 4–5 individuals, creating a calm and focused environment that promotes wellbeing and personal development. For individuals with more complex needs, we may offer single placements or homes with fewer residents to ensure safety and comfort. Each placement is carefully assessed during the referral stage to ensure it is tailored to the individual, supporting both their independence and their unique support requirements.

As a supported living service, Independent Waves Ltd does not automatically include meals, as individuals have full choice over how they manage their food. Many people choose to contribute to a shared household fund for groceries and cleaning products, which allows for rotating cooking responsibilities and helps reduce costs. This arrangement also encourages social interaction and shared living skills. However, those who prefer to manage their own meals are fully supported to do so, including purchasing and preparing their own food. Meal planning is entirely based on personal preference and is discussed during the support planning process to ensure it aligns with each individual's lifestyle and goals.

Residents at Independent Waves Ltd have access to a variety of activities tailored to their interests and wellbeing, including exercise classes, arts and crafts, and social outings. We actively promote social engagement by sharing information about local events and supporting individuals with budget planning to make participation easier. Through regular keyworker meetings, staff explore each person’s hobbies, needs, and goals to personalise activity options and expand opportunities. This approach ensures that everyone is encouraged and supported to take part in meaningful experiences that enrich their daily lives.

Yes—support continues even as you become more independent. At Independent Waves Ltd, promoting independence is central to our approach, but we understand that everyone needs support at times. That’s why each person has an allocated keyworker, regardless of their level of support, ensuring consistent guidance and connection. We also provide a 24/7 on-call service for emergencies, so whether it’s the individual or their next of kin, someone is always available to help. This structure ensures that as independence grows, the safety net of support remains firmly in place.

Yes, we’re here to help you settle in and feel at home. Before you move in, we arrange for staff to visit you in a place where you feel comfortable, using this time to get to know your likes, dislikes, and preferences—including meals you enjoy and the type of support that suits you best. We also consider which staff members may be the best fit to support you, helping to create a smooth and positive transition. When you arrive, our team will assist with your furniture and belongings if needed, and will actively encourage positive relationships within the home to help you feel welcomed, supported, and part of the community from day one.

Yes, personal care is included in our services where required. As a CQC-compliant provider, Independent Waves Ltd is fully equipped to deliver high-quality personal care tailored to individual needs. Prior to starting support, we carry out thorough assessments to identify areas where we can encourage independence, always aiming to help individuals do as much for themselves as possible. All staff are trained in personal care, medication administration, and upholding privacy and dignity, ensuring that when personal care is needed, it is delivered with professionalism, compassion, and respect.

Independent Waves Ltd maintains a high staff-to-resident ratio to ensure every individual receives the attention and support they deserve. In shared care settings, staff are allocated to the house, with additional one-to-one support provided where needed. Rotas are planned six weeks in advance, which can make last-minute changes challenging; however, we use each person’s timetable as a guide and adapt by drawing on staff from other areas or arranging additional support to maintain continuity of care. Our team is consistently praised for going above and beyond, delivering high-quality support with flexibility, dedication, and compassion.

Housing Questions

Homes at Independent Waves Ltd are designed to be safe, comfortable, and sociable environments. Each property features secure entrances, emergency call systems, and regular safety drills to ensure a high standard of safety. All bedrooms are single tenancies, giving individuals privacy and personal space, while communal areas—including hallways, bathrooms, kitchens, and lounges—encourage interaction and shared living. Residents are supported to take part in daily household routines such as joint cleaning, which helps build life skills and a sense of community. The atmosphere is generally calm and welcoming, with staff promoting positive relationships and encouraging participation in home-based activities for those who wish to be more involved.

There is no requirement to bring furnishings when moving into a home with Independent Waves Ltd, as we understand that some individuals may be transitioning from situations where they don’t own furniture. Our staff are happy to support in sourcing second-hand items to help get started, and we often assist with furnishing the space initially. From there, we work with individuals on budget planning to help them gradually purchase their own furniture. This approach not only promotes independence but also encourages pride and responsibility, as people are more likely to care for and value items they’ve chosen and saved for themselves.

Independent Waves operates with the landlord to enable a pet-friendly policy, allowing residents to bring their pets with them, provided it does not negatively impact others living in the home. The individual must take full responsibility for their pet, including feeding, cleaning, and overall care. This approach supports personal choice and companionship while maintaining a respectful and safe environment for everyone in the household.

At Independent Waves Ltd, the composition of each home—whether same-sex or mixed-gender—is based entirely on the individual needs, preferences, and capacity of the people we support. We are open to mixed-gender living arrangements and have successfully supported both male and female residents living together. We also support individuals in long-term relationships to live in the same property, each with their own tenancy, ensuring independence and personal choice. We welcome people of all gender identities and sexual orientations, and any decisions around placements are made with sensitivity, respect, and a focus on safety and wellbeing. If any complications arise, they are managed without affecting the individual's tenancy or support arrangements.

Smoking and vaping are strictly prohibited inside all Independent Waves Ltd properties, in line with government legislation and our tenancy agreements. Smoking indoors is considered a breach of tenancy due to the health risks, potential property damage, and impact on others in the home. To support personal choice while maintaining a safe and respectful environment, designated outdoor smoking areas are provided at each property for the people we support, staff, and visitors. This ensures compliance with legal standards while allowing individuals to smoke or vape responsibly.

The costs associated with Independent Waves Ltd vary depending on the type of accommodation and level of care required. Rent is typically covered through housing benefit, claimed via Universal Credit, and it’s important to declare a single tenancy to ensure the correct entitlement. A service charge is applied to cover a portion of household bills and administrative costs. Food contributions are optional and agreed upon within the household. For those unable to use public transport, a house car is available and charged by mileage. If care is provided, there is usually a contribution toward care costs, which is assessed and arranged through the local council. While these costs may seem complex, our support staff and the landlord’s representative are here to help—offering guidance with benefit claims, attending Job Centre appointments, and assisting with financial reviews to ensure individuals receive the correct support and entitlements. Our aim is to make life less stressful and more manageable for the people we support.

Outreach / Enabling Questions

Our outreach and enabling support service is flexible and tailored to the individual’s needs, typically available between 8am and 8pm, Monday to Sunday. However, we do take into account the location of the person being supported and the availability of staff, especially where public transport is required. After initial contact, we carry out a referral visit to meet the individual in their preferred environment, allowing us to understand their needs and preferences. From this, we create a personalised support plan that works for both the individual and our team, ensuring consistent and meaningful support.
